Not really what I intended to post here…

So in case you’ve been following, there was an allegation made by @light_creative about Melbourne fashion label Leonard St plagiarising a local artist. The post has since been removed with no explanation, which is seriously shady.

I’ve been asked about my short interactions with this little drama, so here’s the short email transaction between me and Leonard St’s PR company. I assume it’s okay for me to post this, so here:

From: Jane Harris jane@flauntmarketing.com.au Date: Wed, 7 Sep 2011 10:54:00 +1000 Subject: Re: A short note about plagarism.

The facts are as follows:

Leonard St. purchased some print tees form a supplier last summer, it did not print the tees itself under the Leonard St. label. The tees had no labels so a Leonard St swing ticket with price was attached as is required. Designer, Amanda McCarthy was contacted directly by Eveline and she immediately passed the copyright infringement onto the people she bought the tees them from and they compensated Eveline, as they themselves were not aware of it at the time.

The second image must have sold before Eveline or Amanda realized it was by the same artist. The product had been made in Thailand. Over a few conversations with Eveline, Amanda suggested she should always water mark her work online so that it is not copy-able like this. Amanda no longer deals with the supplier that was selling the tees. It was learning curve for her.

“I too have my had my own designs copied by major retailers and it is distressing. This is not how I do business. I did not produce these prints. The label area is blocked in the image that would show the public it is not a Leonard St product.” Amanda McCarthy.

To whom it may concern,

This is just a short note to say that I value Melbourne artists substantially more than fashion labels who plagiarise. It should be fairly obvious in 2011 that this sort of unethical behaviour is highly visible. I will go out of my way to avoid doing business with a label that engages in this kind of activity and actively encourage others to do the same.

Thanks for your time,

Cade

Kind of interested to see where this goes. Especially in light of that deleted blog post.
